A common misconception is that your home insurance will cover you while you undertake your project. Most will exclude structural work and you may be left without cover for the existing structure, materials on site and the liability exposures.
This is why arranging an insurance policy to cover your project is essential. Our extension insurance provides cover that home insurance does not even if your property is unoccupied during that period.
Our policy, backed by Aviva will cover all types of extension work whether you are undertaking a loft conversion or a large extension.
We can provide cover from only 6 months and all policies, no matter the duration of cover include the existing structure, new works, materials on site, public and employers’ liability as well as items of plant (optional).
Once your contractor is in place and works starts on site they will probably provide some cover however, if you are sourcing and buying some of the materials yourself your contractor cannot cover these and you will need to insure them yourself.
If you are financing your project via a mortgage it is very unlikely they will accept a contractor’s policy and will insist your source your own insurance.
Building sites are hazardous places of work. Injuries sustained by contractors, friends or visitors to site whether invited or not – are all likely to become your responsibility and claims for injury are usually very large as are the legal costs involved in the process.
We do recognise that builds don’t always run to plan for various reasons which is why we offer flexible short-term extensions from as little as one month.
